Bagan, Myanmar is one of those ancient mysteries that is hard to believe. Its existence defies logic and makes one question if they are still on Earth.
I was sure it would disappear into a misty dream at any moment and I would wake up back in the dusty town hotel.
But Bagan was, and remains, a real place.
4000 primordial temples rise from an endless sea of greenery like an army of alien spaceships about to leave the planet.
In the morning and evening, a thick blanket of mist only adds to the effect. There is nothing, and will never be anything like it. Bagan is one of the gems that make going to Myanmar a life changing experience. Take a look and decide for yourself!

If you want to see more from Myanmar you can get your fix here in my article the 4 Reasons you Have to go to Myanmar Now. Would you want to see the sunrise in from the top of a temple or a hot air balloon in Bagan?
Absolutely stunning pictures! I bet it’s quite a site to see those hot air balloons over those incredible temples!
Thank you Sanjana! It was one of the most awe inspiring sights in the world!
WOW! I love them all. Myanmar has been on my radar for awhile now lately…easy to see why with photos like these!
Thank you, Hannah! I hope you get the chance to see the temples in person too! The pictures don’t even do them justice.
Love the shot of the single hot air balloon! It looks amazing as a silhouette and the backdrop colours are so soft and even have an ombre look to them!!
Thanks for that beautiful description Alli. It certainly does the photograph justice!
Hi,
Great pictures, especially the sunsets are amazing.
Having enjoyed both the view from a Hot Air Balloon and from atop a temple, I would say that you should do both, as it gives you different perspectives. Sunrise & sunset are in my opinion best enjoyed from Paya Pyathada, as it is quite difficult to reach and no buses go there.
Floating over Bagan in a Hot Air Balloon is an experience of a lifetime, and definitely worth the 320 USD.
Cheers, Gilles
Hey Gillie, I took my bike out to paya pyathada and I have to agree with you, it’s amazing! As for the balloon, I also agree that if you have the time and the money it is worth it. However, last time I saw them, over half didn’t get in the air until well after sunrise. I am not willing to take a gamble like that for 320 usd!
