Black Hills National Forest Hiking Mountains South Dakota As Torin & I continued our road trip across the U.S.A., we realized that seeing Mount Rushmore was pretty fantastic, but it didn’t quite put the cherry on top of the cake for us.

After speaking with one of the local rangers, we decided that a hike would be the best way to get a real appreciation for the surrounding outdoors.

And boy was it!

The rocky mountain tops here proved to stand out like none I have ever seen before.  Super jagged edges, pointing straight up to the sky, provided fantastic bouldering opportunities.  The only downfall was the constant drizzle of rain making everything too wet to climb.

Pushing the limit a bit and managing to make it to the top of these beautiful peaks, Torin & I were rewarded with some of the most scenic backcountries I’ve ever seen in my life.  Enjoy the following travel pornography to see what you’ve been missing out on if you haven’t made it up to the Black Hills National Park of South Dakota!

Parking the car on the side of the road, Torin & I prepared our sandwiches and made the way up Horse Thief Lake Trail.  At the time, the lake had been drained dry but luckily the views ahead were still worth the hike in.  But the real joy came from stepping off the beaten path…that’s when we were rewarded with the following views:
