If you’ve got a weekend getaway coming up, chances are you’re staring down at an empty suitcase wondering how little or how much to take along with you.
While weekend trips are quick, sometimes you can pack a multitude of activities into the days.
The more you plan to do, the more you’ll need to take along. Before you start tossing stuff in, take the time to consider these few factors.
Packing light for a weekend getaway
Consider Your Destination
When it comes to packing, you need to consider your destination. Warmer climates call for sundresses, shorts and tank tops. Beach and resort destinations mean bathing suits and cover-ups, while colder destinations such as a ski resort mean you should pack your flannels and long johns.
Some destinations combine attractions, such as this San Diego hotel and resort, where you can spend the entire getaway in the comfort of a hotel with plenty of amenities, so your packing will be more on the minimal side. So whether you decide to spend the weekend eating seafood and exploring Pier 39 in San Francisco or go exploring Clearwater Beach, it’s smart to pack the appropriate attire for the occasion.
Opt for Evening Wear
Even if you don’t plan to hit the town for a glamorous event, plans can always change. You might discover a restaurant or club that calls to you so it pays to be prepared, rather than miss out. Pack a cocktail dress and a few other going out pieces.
Ladies, if you plan to wear a low-cut dress for a night out, you might want to consider packing a plunge bra. They’re great for support and you don’t have to worry about them peeking through the fabric. Of course, the guys can never go wrong with packing a nice pair of slacks and a well-fitted button up dress shirt.

Don’t Forget the Camera
No matter where you go, chances are you’re going to want to take pictures to capture memories. Be sure to pack your camera, but leave your laptop at home. While it’s common to work while on vacation, it’s a good idea to unplug for a bit and just enjoy the time you have. Your camera, however, is a must.
You can even use your phone to take pictures. Most smartphones these days come with powerful capabilities including filters that let you take beautiful selfies, sepia, and black and white photos with a simple click of a button.
Comfortable shoes are a must regardless of your destination. Make sure you pack a pair of sneakers if you plan to walk around a lot or hike somewhere like intense like Mount Rinjani – the volcano in Indonesia. Sandals work well for warmer climates, but make sure they’re a pair that you can walk in for extended periods of time.
Heels or wedges are a must if you plan to go dancing or out to a fancy restaurant, but again choose ones that you’re able to walk in to prevent your ankles from rolling. Men should pack a pair of loafers or dress shoes that pair well with khakis and slacks.
Weekend trips are meant to be no-fuss, but when it comes to packing you still need to make sure you have the essentials. As long as you bring the proper clothes and shoes, you can usually grab toiletries you forgot at a store when you arrive, so avoid the stress and focus on the fun you’re going to have!
